Refinement of nature.
Plant research brings ingenious techniques from Mother Nature to light.
Impressive and sophisticated, terrifying and deadly. Plants are neither defenceless nor squeamish. They draw on a wide arsenal of defensive weapons to defend themselves against attacks, not even sparing their own casualties.
Example 1: AMERICANS ARE THE RULERS OF THE WORLD...
Think again.
Trees are more sophisticated and lead the ants into a total dependence on the tree's own energy donor via a criminal sucrose incompatibility, according to the acacia. Thousands of ants now defend the acacia, after all their only food source. Plant pests have a bad hand here.
Example 2: ...EVEN HERE THE AMES WANT TO BE THE RULERS OF THE WORLD...
Think again.
Unlike in the first example, the trees do not manipulate the ants directly, but lure their favourite energy production site, the aphids, with carbohydrates. Under stress, e.g. during drought, the plant increases carbohydrate production. In the stressed stage, trees are particularly interesting for pests because they have weak defences. The greater food supply leads to a population explosion of aphids and an ant protection army that expands in numbers.
...AND THEN THEY ARE THE RULERS OF THE WORLD AFTER ALL.
